Weird Sticks was invited to deliver a series of workshops at HMP Channings Wood as part of the transformative Open Door Project, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
At the start of 2024, we hosted two days of engaging ‘taster’ willow workshops, where participants crafted tension trays along with other items like willow hearts and stars.
In the summer, we offered four beginner basket weaving workshops, providing valuable skill-building opportunities for participants to explore a variety of weaving techniques.
The Open Door Project isa prisoner-led project coordinated through the Library and Arts Centre, designed to provide arts and creative experiences to the men and has been a unique opportunity for them to explore and develop their creative potential, connect with their community and gain valuable insight into opportunities for work within the creative industries upon release.
Some of the work created during the project will form part of a touring exhibition visiting a number of arts and culture sites in Torbay.
