Working in partnership with Play Torbay, Weird Sticks was commissioned to create and deliver a series of eight ‘Inquisitive about Indigos’ Discovery Experiences during the summer holidays to celebrate their Associate Partnership with the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
The sessions were designed to to encourage children and families to attend the summer play sessions whilst finding out about the Geopark and its significance.
As part of the project, Weird Sticks worked with the children, young people and Play Torbay staff members to create a special willow gateway entrance to the woodland area at Indigos Play and Ecology centre. Different coloured willow varieties were used to create layers of ‘willow rock’ to form a visual representation of the geological periods of time.
Throughout the sessions the children created small creatures and plants from willow which were woven into the willow ‘rocks’. These included trilobites, echinoderms, crinoids, armoured fish, ammonites and reptile eggs as well as ancient bones and teeth to represent finds from Kents Cavern.
